DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad wrapped competition at the first day of the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships.
The Green and Gold epee squad finished the day with five bout wins, and placed second overall.
SABRE
Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]) and
Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) were the two student-athletes that represented WSU in the sabre weapon.
Over six bouts, Byars compiled a 3-14 record, securing wins vs. Denison University, Northwestern University, and Cleveland State University.
Siddiqui ended the first day with a 1-16 bout record, with her sole win coming against The Ohio State University.
FOIL
Wayne State had two members compete in the foil weapon, those being
Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) and
Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli).
Mancini had a strong day, finishing with an 11-4 bout ledger that included two 3-0 performances vs. Denison University and Lawrence University.
Bongado competed in 15 bouts, falling in each of the 15.
EPEE
Leading the way in the epee weapon was
Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály). The Warrior continued her impressive sophomore campaign by going 14-3 including 3-0 performances against Denison, Ohio State, and Lawrence.
Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) saw success as well as the graduate student finished the first day with a 10-7 mark that included a 3-0 bout vs. LU.
Along with her two epee teammates,
Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE) impressed as well. The sophomore totaled a 12-5 ledger with 3-0 bouts against Denison and Lawrence.
