Women's Fencing Finishes the Final Day of the CCFC Championships

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad has wrapped competition in the final day of the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships on Sunday.  The second day consisted of individual bouts only.

Sophomore WSU student-athlete Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály) finished second in the epee weapon.

EPEE
In the first round of pool play, Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.), Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE), and Galfalvy represented the Warriors.

Abdrabou and Galfalvy moved on to the second round of pool play after both student-athletes finished with a 5-1 bout record.  Abdrabou ended the first round with a +14 touch differential while Galfalvy was +11.

Shevchenko went 2-4 in pool play with a -9 touch differential.  The graduate student did not move on to the second round.

While competing in the second round, Galfalvy was 3-3 and held a +3 touch differential, earning her the eighth spot in the direct elimination stage.

Abdrabou also went 3-3 in round two, bit was -3 in touch differential, finishing as the No. 15 fencer.

In direct elimination, Galfalvy battled in the table of eight, earning a 15-13 upset-victory against top-ranked Amanda Pirkowski of Northwestern University.  Moving on to the semi-final bout, the sophomore once again prevailed as she defeated Christina Liu (NU) 15-11.  In her finals bout, the Warrior was tied at 14 touches each with Gloria Klughardt of The Ohio State University but was unable to land the final touch, finishing second overall in women's epee.

FOIL
In the foil weapon, Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) and Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) both competed for Wayne Sate.

Mancini was +3 in touch differential, earning a 3-3 overall bout record in round one.  The junior compiled a 2-3 record in the second round of pool play while having  a +5 touch differential.  She finished 10th in the foil weapon.

Bongado finished 23rd overall with a 1-5 overall bout record while being -20 in touch differential.

SABRE
In sabre, Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]) finished 25th with an 0-5 bout record, being -19 in touch differential.  

Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) placed 26th after going 0-6 with a -26 touch differential.
