Men's Tennis Prepared to Host Dragons

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad will host Tiffin University on Thursday, March 20, in the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.  The match will begin at 1:00 PM and will serve as the final non-conference competition before WSU begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.

LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors return home following the team's trip to Florida.  While in Florida, the Green and Gold tallied a 2-3 ledger that included wins over No. 13-ranked Rollins, and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) opponent Ave Maria.

In the contest vs. the Tars, WSU prevailed 4-3.  With the match tied at 3-3, Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) triumphed 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in a back-and-forth battle with Fabian Gusic to lift Wayne State over RC.

When matched with the Gyrenes,  the Green and Gold won all but one singles match, defeating AMU 5-1.  Due to inclement weather, the squads did not compete in doubles.

SCOUTING THE DRAGONS
Tiffin enters the match with an 8-7 mark and winners of their previous two contests, defeating both Marian University and John Carroll University.  The Warriors have won the last eight matches against TU, including a 4-3 victory in last year's NCAA Midwest Regional.

Phil Conley is in his 16th season as the head coach of the Dragons.  While at the helm, Conley has compiled a 209-170 mark that includes nine seasons with a winning record.  Along with his duties on the men's side,  Conley serves as the head coach of the TU women's tennis squad, leading them to a  233-140 ledger.

ITA RANKINGS UPDATE
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its most recent poll on Wednesday, March 12.  The WSU men's tennis squad appeared as the No. 13-ranked team.  In singles, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) was ranked 14th, while the pairing of Drenth and George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) were viewed as the No. 15-ranked doubles team.
