DETROIT -- Redshirt sophomore
Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) of the Wayne State University baseball team was named GLIAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday, as announced by the league office.
The honor comes after Sanders hit .600 (9-for-15) with a 1.617 OPS (.684 OBP + .933 SLG) in five games last week including a pair of three-hit performances on Saturday and Sunday against Roosevelt. The left fielder racked up six runs scored, three doubles, one triple, two RBI, 14 total bases, two walks, two hit-by-pitches, only one strikeout, two sacrifice hits, and three stolen bases in three attempts. Sanders is hitting .526 (10-for-19) during his current six-game hitting streak, which has raised his season average from .235 to .314.
Sanders and his teammates will take a brief break from league play on Tuesday to travel to Findlay for a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Oilers. UF defeated WSU 4-3 last Tuesday at Harwell Field for Wayne State's home opener.
