Two Women's Tennis Standouts Receive Academic All-District Recognition

Ruyssen and Weekes honored for work in the classroom.

DETROIT -- Two members of the 2024-25 Wayne State University women's tennis squad were recognized this afternoon with Academic All-District honors by College Sports Communicators (CSC, formerly CoSIDA).

Honored for their work both on the court and in the classroom were graduate student Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and junior Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.).

Ruyssen, the reigning CSC D2 Women's Tennis Academic All-American of the Year, is receiving CSC Academic All-District accolades for the third consecutive year.  In addition to last year's honors, she was a CSC Third Team Academic All-American in 2022-23.  Ruyssen was voted GLIAC Player of the Year for the third time in four years (2022, 2024, and 2025).  She has compiled an 11-4 singles record this season improving her career WSU mark to 82-29, while playing first singles all four years.  In addition, she has a 24-8 doubles mark this season  to increase her all-time doubles mark at WSU to 94-39, while playing at the first flight all four years.  She currently ranks fifth in school history in singles wins, and third in doubles victories with the most of any Warrior in the last 10 years.  Her 27 doubles wins last year equaled the WSU single-season mark.  Wayne State has a 72-22 record during her career, which includes a 28-2 mark in GLIAC regular-season matches.  Ruyssen earned a bachelor's degree in Finance in May of 2024 with a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average.  Her cumulative GPA after two semesters in the MBA program is 3.50.

This is the second consecutive year that Weekes has received CSC Academic All-District honors.  She won her last five doubles matches, all at the third flight with Martyna Szpakowska.  Including the fall portion of the schedule, Weekes played doubles with four different partners this year compiling an overall record of 11-5.  She had a 7-5 record at No. 4 singles this year to improve her career singles record to 49-13 after primarily playing sixth singles her first two years.  Weekes has a 47-20 all-time doubles record.  She maintains a 3.91 cumulative GPA after six semesters, while majoring in World Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

The WSU women's tennis squad won the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship with an 8-0 conference record, and was runner-up in the league tournament falling 4-3 to Grand Valley State in the title match.  The 27th-ranked Warriors are hosting an NCAA Regional and are playing #32-ranked Tiffin today with the winner advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in Florida next week.  Wayne State has compiled a 7-3 record in the NCAA Tournament over the last three seasons (2022-23-24), advancing to the national quarterfinals each of the last two years.
