Men's Tennis Team and Individuals Appear on Final ITA Rankings

Drenth was the lone member to be ranked nationally in singles.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team is ranked third in the Midwest Region and 22nd nationally in the final NCAA Division 2 ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) after a 15-8 overall record and an NCAA Midwest Regional berth.

In singles competition, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) is ranked fifth while George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) is 11th regionally.  The senior was the only member of the squad to receive a national ranking, appearing as the No. 56 singles player according to the ITA.

On the doubles side, the pairing of Drenth and Day rank fourth in the Midwest and 32nd in the nation after tallying a 21-7 mark when competing with one another.  Drenth appears twice as he and freshman Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) rounded the regional ranking as the No. 10-ranked duo following a 4-1 ledger together over the final six contests of the campaign with one match going unfinished.

This season, the Warriors faced eight opponents that were on the final national ranking, as the Green and Gold competed against Barry (third), Flagler (fourth), UIndy (ninth), Grand Valley State (11th), Embry-Riddle (23rd), Rollins (27th), Ferris State (28th), and Purdue Northwest (29th).  WSU nabbed wins over the Greyhounds (4-3), the Tars (4-3), and the Bulldogs (5-2 and 4-3).

As mentioned before, Wayne State earned a 15-8 ledger while going 11-4 in the Midwest Region and 5-2 within the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
