DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team, which made its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals, has been honored with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team Award while six student-athletes received Scholar-Athlete accolades.
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale)
- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form
- All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
Wayne State earned a 3.616 GPA during the 2024-25 academic year.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
- Be listed on the institutional eligibility form
The six Warriors that were named ITA Scholar-Athletes were:

Dessyre Obedencio, So. Warren, Mich., 3.68, Nursing
Shanice Weekes, Jr., London England, 3.96, World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Honors
Martyna Szpakowska, Jr., Gdansk, Poland, 4.00, Psychology Honors
Shantala Uzcategui, R-Jr., Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela, 4.00, Excersise and Sport Science
The WSU women's tennis team tallied a 14-5 mark that included an 8-0 record within the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), a 7-0 ledger when competing in home matches, a GLIACÂ Regular Season title, an NCAA Midwest Regional title, an NCAA Tournament win, and an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
