Women's Hoops Posts 68-59 Win at Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-4 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) earned a 68-59 come-from-behind victory at Davenport University (4-10 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
A triple by McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) and five points from Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) gave WSU an early 8-0 lead and prompted a Davenport timeout.  DU tallied 10 unanswered points to secure its first lead of the game (10-8).  Lutchka ended a six-minute scoring drought, as she found the bottom of the net on a lay-in.  Davenport's Anna Axtell knocked down a triple for a 13-10 advantage, but Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. [Central Michigan]) converted an old-fashioned three-point play to knot the score.  Two points each way kept it tied 15-15 after the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
The Panthers opened on a 15-4 run to nab a 30-19 advantage in the second stanza.  Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) connected from long range to slow the hosts and begin an 8-4 run including five unanswered to cut the deficit to five points (32-27).

Neither team would make a field goal for the final 2:38 of the quarter, with the only points scored being a pair of free throws from Davenport, as the hosts brought a 34-27 lead into the halftime intermission.

THIRD QUARTER
The Warriors came out firing in the third period, erupting for a 9-2 run to tie the game at 36-36.  A three pointer and jumper put DU on top 41-36, before Thompson shortened the margin to three points after a lay-up.  The Panthers extended their lead to six on the next possession, after an Anna Axtell long-range jump shot.  Thompson once more found the bottom of the net for her 10th point of the game (44-40).  Four more points for the reigning GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week sandwiched a DU bucket to cut the lead to two before Nevaeh Williams made a shot late for a 48-44 Davenport lead entering the final quarter.

Thompson tallied 10 of the 17 points that the Warriors scored in the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Green and Gold notched eight of the first 11 points for the quarter, taking a 52-51 advantage after a Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. [Lakeland University]) lay-up at the 8:06 mark.  It was the first lead for the guests since it was 16-15 at the 8:52 mark in the second frame.  Miller's bucket began an 11-3 run for the Warriors, resulting in a 61-54 lead.

The teams entered a dry spell that lasted nearly four minutes, until DU's Axtell made two free throws.  A 7-0 run including five-straight for Thompson extended the lead to 12 points.  Anna Axtell splashed a three pointer as time expired as Wayne State won 68-59.

TEAM STATISTICS
WSU made 27-of-57 attempts (47.4 percent) compared to 20-of-66 (30.3 percent) for the Panthers.  The Green and Gold connected on 35.7 percent of triple tries (5-of-14), while Davenport went 9-of-31 (29 percent).  Wayne State hauled in 49 rebounds to DU's 32.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Thompson notched her fourth double-double of the season, with game highs in points (23), rebounds (11), and steals (3).  Miller nearly posted a double-double, with nine points and a WSU career-high 10 rebounds.  Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. [Bowling Green]) had a game-high four assists.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Axtell scored a team-best 20 points and blocked one shot.  Williams added 13 points, four boards, and two assists.  Tangee Gagau recorded three assists and a pair of steals.
