Career Night for Lutchka Lifts Women's Hoops Over Parkside 95-88

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (11-4 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) topped the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (7-8 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) 95-88 behind a career-high 32 points from senior forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) on Thursday evening.

The Warriors move to 6-1 in the conference, and nab their first home win of the new year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
The Rangers opened the game's scoring with buckets on back-to-back possessions.  Lutchka put WSU on the board with a pair of free throws before UWP's Cassidy Arni pushed the guest's advantage back to four points.  A 13-3 scoring spurt for the hosts put WSU ahead 15-9, before Parkside scored 11-straight points for a 20-15 lead with 2:51 left in the opening frame.  Wayne State tallied six of the nine final points of the period, trailing 23-21 after 10:00.

SECOND QUARTER
Lutchka splashed a triple that prompted a 12-6 rally that resulted in a 33-29 lead for the Green and Gold at the 4:39 mark.  Lillie Petersen (UWP) connected from behind the arc to slim the margin to one point before freshman AJ Rickli (Mattawan, Mich. / Paw Paw) made good on a lay-up (35-32).  UWP fought back with a 6-3 run to tie the contest at 38 points apiece entering the halftime intermission.

THIRD QUARTER
McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) found the bottom of the net on a long-range jumper, but Katie Hamill (UWP) responded with a long ball of her own to keep the contest knotted, this time at 41-41.  Ferguson once more made a basket to ignite a 17-2 WSU scoring run, that resulted in a 58-43 advantage for Wayne State.  Six-consecutive points for the guests slowed the leak (58-49), before a Ferguson and-one pushed the margin to 12 (61-49) with 3:21 to go in the third quarter.  The scoring was nearly even for the remainder of the frame, with the hosts slightly edging Parkside 9-8, entering the final quarter holding a 70-57 lead.

Wayne State out-paced the Rangers 32-19 in the third quarter behind 14 points from Ferguson.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Warriors posted 10 of the first 12 points of the final quarter to push their lead to 21 (80-59), before UWP erupted for a 13-2 run, including 10 straight, to cut the lead to 10 points (82-72) with just under 5:00 left to play.  Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) made a triple before seven-consecutive Parkside points brought UWP within six at the 1:46 mark.  The Green and Gold was able to stave off the Rangers' efforts, narrowly out-scoring the foe 10-9, including six makes at the charity stripe, for the 95-88 victory.
