Football Has Two Academic All-District Recipients

DETROIT -- Two members of the Wayne State University football team earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors as announced by the organization.

The WSU student-athletes that garnered recognition were redshirt senior wide receiver Angel Carrillo (Atascosa, Texas / Southwest [Univ. of Fort Lauderdale / Livingstone College]) and redshirt junior defensive end Will Fennema (Middleville, Mich. / Grand Rapids South Christian [Madonna]).

Carrillo, who transferred to Wayne State in the summer of 2025, is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Marketing within the College of Business.  The redshirt senior was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) for Fall 2025 and served as one of the team captains, while being the only to do so for each of the 11 contests.  On the field, Carrillo finished tied-for-second on the team in catches with 26, and third in receiving yards with 238, while tallying 123 kickoff return yards on six attempts.

Fennema, who joined Wayne State in January of 2024, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sport Science within the College of Education.  He has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) in each of his four semesters at Wayne State, Winter 2024, Fall 2024 (4.00), Winter 2025 (4.00), and Fall 2025, and was a recipient of the WSU Football Scholar-Athlete Award following the 2024 campaign.  In addition, he has twice earned the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award (2023-24, 2024-25). Fennema has appeared and started in 12 contests as a Warrior, including all 11 this past year.  He finished seventh in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in tackles for loss yards (38), tied-for-eighth in sack yards (24), and tied-for-10th in tackles for loss (7.5).  His 7.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks led all WSU defensive linemen, while his four quarterback hurries were a team high.
