Women's Basketball Defeats Michigan Tech 68-67

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (18-6, 13-3 GLIAC) nabbed a 68-67 home win over Michigan Tech University (15-9, 9-7 GLIAC) for its fourth-consecutive win on Saturday in the WSU Fieldhouse.  The Warriors are 10-0 when playing at home this season.

Junior guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) tallied her 1,000th career point, becoming the 21st player in program history to eclipse that mark, doing so in 84 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) found the bottom of the net to start the game, but MTU's Ella Mason knotted the contest at 2-2 after making a pair of free throws.  Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. [Central Michigan]) connected on a lay-up before four-straight points for the Huskies made it 6-4.  WSU rattled a 9-4 scoring run for a 13-10 advantage.  A Dani Nuest (MTU) three pointer and a Ferguson triple closed the first quarter, as WSU led 16-13.

SECOND QUARTER
A pair of lay-ins both ways made it 20-17.  Michigan Tech posted a short 7-4 spurt which was capped by a Mason triple to tie the game as 24-24.  Ferguson put the Green and Gold back on top with a free throw, but an Isabella Hanna (MTU) bucket on the ensuing possession gave the Huskies a one-point advantage.  WSU responded with six-straight points for a 31-26 lead.  The scoring was nearly even to close the second stanza, with the Warriors leading 40-34.

THIRD QUARTER
Both squads were scoreless for the first 1:30 of the third quarter before Kloe Zentkowski (MTU) found the bottom of the net.  Lutchka responded with a pair of makes at the charity stripe (42-36).  A Mason (MTU) jumper preceded two Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  A 6-2 run for Wayne State pushed its lead 10 points (50-40).  A 10-5 run for the Huskies made it 55-50 in favor of the hosts.

FOURTH QUARTER
Each team tallied 10 points to advance the contest to 65-60.  Four-straight points for the Huskies closed the gap to one (65-64), prompting a WSU timeout with 1:38 remaining.  Out of the stoppage, sophomore guard Koko Sylvester (Toledo, Ohio / Start) splashed her third triple of the contest (a career best) to put the home team ahead by four points.  Kloe Zentkowski (MTU) knocked down a long-range jumper on the ensuing possession to once again pull within one.  On the final possession of the game, Lutchka corralled a steal to seal the win for the Warriors.

The Warriors shot 43.1 percent from the floor (25-of-58) including 7-of-22 from deep (31.8 percent).  The Huskies made 49.2 percent of shots (29-of-59), but just 5-of-20 from long range.  At the free throw line, MTU was 4-of-8 while WSU was 11-of-13.  Michigan tech won the battle of the boards, hauling in 37 to Wayne State's 29.
