Women's Hoops Defeats Roosevelt 94-73 for Fifth-Straight Win

Wayne State secured a home game for the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals on March 4.

CHICAGO -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (19-6, 14-3 GLIAC) collected its fifth-straight win, defeating Roosevelt (7-17, 6-11 GLIAC) by a score of 94-73 inside the Goodman Center on Thursday night.  The Warriors' 10th victory in their last 12 contests locked up a home game for the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Brynne Katcher (RU) made a pair from the charity stripe to begin the scoring, but a Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) bucket and Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. [Central Michigan]) triple gave WSU a 5-2 advantage.  Isabella Pitta connected on a lay-up before Gordon once again splashed one from deep, prompting a 10-4 run for the Green and Gold (15-8).  Marie Outlay shortened the gap to five points (15-10), but Lexi Boyke (Frankenmuth, Mich.) connected on a long-range jumper to advance WSU's lead back to eight.  Two points each way made it 20-12 before Boyke extended the lead to 10 points (22-12).  Aubrey Leonard (RU) and Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) traded triples to make it 25-15.  The Lakers scored six straight before a buzzer-beating lay-up from Gordon made it 27-21 after 10 minutes of action.

SECOND QUARTER
A Roosevelt free throw and bucket brought the hosts within three points (27-24).  A 13-9 run for the Lakers gave them a 37-36 advantage at the 3:40 mark. Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. [Bowling Green]) found the bottom of the net though on a lay-in to spark a 12-0 run for WSU to close the second stanza, leading 48-37.

THIRD QUARTER
A turn-around jumper by Thompson extended the WSU run to 14 points and the lead to 50-37.  A Pair of free throws each way made it 52-39.  The Warriors tallied the ensuing eight points to advance the lead to 21 points (60-31).  RU was able to shorten the gap to 14 points, out-pacing the guests 17-10 for the remainder of the frame.

FOURTH QUARTER
Tubergen and Thompson both found the bottom of the net, making it 74-56.  Pitta responded with a long ball, but six-straight points for the Warriors pushed the game to 80-59.  Roosevelt made a triple and a jumper inside the arc to make it 80-64.  The Green and Gold closed the game with a 14-9 spurt to post the 94-73 win.

TEAM STATISTICS
The Warriors connected on more than 50 percent of of their looks for the seventh time this season (6-1 when doing so), making 34-of-67, including 12-of-24 from deep (50 percent), which is the second-highest three-point percentage for the Warriors this season (53.3 percent vs. Alabama-Huntsville).  RU was 24-of-68 from the floor (35.3 percent), including 6-of-22 from long range (27.3 percent).  WSU was 14-of-15 from the charity stripe, compared to Roosevelt's 19-of-23.  The Green and Gold hauled in 41 rebounds to the Lakers' 35.  WSU led for 37:06 of the contest.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) led all scorers with 28 points (10-of-14 FG, 5-of-6 3PT, 3-of-3 FT), while nabbing eight boards.  Thompson posted a double-double with 26 points (9-of-16 FG, 8-of-8 FT) and 10 rebounds, while dishing out six assists and corralling three steals.  Gordon contributed 12 points (4-of-6 FG< 2-of-3="" 3pt,="" 2-of-2="" ft).=""  tubergen="" totaled="" nine="" points,="" five="" helpers,="" three="" rebounds,="" and="" three="">

LEADING THE LAKERS
Isabella Pitta and Isabel Lindo both tallied 15 points, with Pitta adding 11 boards for a double-double.  Marie Outlay had 11 points, six steals, four assists, and three rebounds.

The Warriors will face the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday, February 21, in De Simone Arena beginning at 2:00 PM ET.
