Women's Basketball to Play Host to Davenport and Grand Valley State

GAME STORYLINES
The Wayne State University women's basketball team will welcome Davenport and top-ranked Grand Valley State to the WSU Fieldhouse on Thursday and Saturday, respectively,  to start a four-game home stand.  The Green and Gold aim to remain unbeaten at home, entering Thursday's contest with a 6-0 ledger.

SERIES HISTORY
WSU is 13-4 when playing DU, including a flawless 7-0 mark at home.  Wayne State has won the last six meetings.

Earlier this season, in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Green and Gold earned a 68-59 win that saw three WSU Warriors score in double figures as Taylor Thompson (23), McKenna Ferguson (18), and Gabi Lutchka (12) all eclipsed that mark.  Thompson garnered a double-double with 11 rebounds.  Mackenzie Miller added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors are 26-67 against GVSU, including a 17-26 mark in Detroit, Mich.

In the last meeting, Wayne State fell 81-80 in a heartbreaker on the road in which three WSU starters fouled out of the contest.  Ferguson and Emily Homan led the squad with 15 points apiece, while Lutchka added 11.  Homan hauled in six rebounds and tallied four steals.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Davenport is 6-14 overall, with a 4-8 ledger in the GLIAC.  DU had garnered league wins over Lake Superior State (74-59), Purdue Northwest (72-42), Roosevelt (73-57), and Michigan Tech (63-51).

Maddie Geers paces the Panthers with 12.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, while blocking a team-best 19 shots.   Nevaeh Williams adds 10.9 PPG and has tallied a team-leading 54 assists and 39 steals.  

Shonda Sanders has guided Davenport to a 22-82 mark in her four years at the helm.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS
GVSU remains unbeaten ahead of its contest with Purdue Northwest on Thursday, and is the No. 1-ranked squad in the nation.

Paige VanStee leads the way for the Lakers contributing 15.3 points per game with a team-high 133 rebounds and 47 steals.  MacKenzie Bisballe is scoring 14.3 PPG and hauling in 5.8 rebounds per game.

Mike Williams has posted a 298-49 record in his 11 seasons with Grand Valley State.  He has guided the Lakers to five GLIAC regular-season titles, three league tournament championships, a trio of regional titles, and last year's National Championship.

HOME SWEET HOME
After playing 14-of-20 games on the road this year, WSU will be at home for six of the final eight contests.  When playing in the WSU Fieldhouse, the Green and Gold is 6-0.

MILESTONE WATCH
Junior guard McKenna Ferguson is 56 points away from becoming the 21st player in program history to eclipse 1,000.

Senior forward Taylor Thompson played her 100th game as a Warrior this past Saturday at Ferris State, and is 97 points away from 1,000 in her career.

LOHR REACHES 400
Wayne State head coach Carrie Lohr earned her 400th collegiate head coaching victory with WSU's 78-66 win at Tiffin on December 9.  This includes nine years at St. Clair County Community College (SC4) and 15 seasons with the Warriors.

STACKING DOUBLE-DOUBLES
Taylor Thompson notched her seventh double-double of the season during the 89-68 win over Purdue Northwest, tying a career-high 33 points to go with 10 rebounds.  The senior forward is tied-for-46th among active Division II players with 14 career double-doubles.

Gabi Lutchka has tallied three double-doubles this season including back-to-back road games at Northwood (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Purdue Northwest (18 points, 10 rebounds), and most recently against Roosevelt (25 points, 10 rebounds).

Jaci Tubergen joined the double-double party, notching her first with a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds during the 86-83 win at Michigan Tech.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Warriors' strength of schedule (SOS) is .596 (236-160), which is tied-for-seventh nationally out of 298 schools, with WSU's composite schedule ranking 13th nationally (.576, 318-234).

LEAGUE RECOGNITION
WSU student-athletes have earned six GLIAC Player of the Week Awards thus far in the 2025-26 campaign.

Junior guard McKenna Ferguson has garnered two, with her most recent coming on the offensive end of the court (12/8) after tallying 12 points and two assists at Purdue Northwest, and a career-best 32 points along with four steals, three assists, and three rebounds against #18-Ferris State.

Senior forward Taylor Thompson has been recognized three times, earning Defensive Player of the Week honors (1/5) after notching her third-consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 boards at Saginaw Valley State and recording eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks at Lake Superior State.

Senior forward Gabi Lutchka earned her first Offensive Player of the Week award of the year (1/19) after posting a career-high 32 points alongside nine rebounds against Parkside, and a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds vs. Roosevelt.

INCREASED PRODUCTION
Senior guard Jaci Tubergen has started 19 of the 20 games this season after being utilized in a reserve role a year ago.  The Hudsonville, Mich., product has increased her scoring from 1.5 points per contest last season to 6.9 PPG this year, while passing her total number of triples made (six) in 2024-25, with 18 this year.  Tubergen has dished out more assists as well, with 59 so far.

After playing in 14 games as a freshman and 17 as a sophomore, Emily Homan has seen an uptick in action during her junior campaign.  The Haslett, Mich., native is playing over 14 minutes per game, while passing her rebound total from a year ago with 48 thus far, and has surpassed her total number of points from last year  with 71.

At #1-Grand Valley State on Jan. 8, Homan notched then career highs in points (15), rebounds (six), and steals (four).

Tubergen tallied her first-career double-double during the team's 86-83 victory at Michigan Tech, with a career-high in both points (14) and rebounds (10).

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
The Green and Gold ranks first in the GLIAC in field goal percentage (.449), which is 13th nationally, and defensive rebounds per game (27.5), which is 58th in the country.

McKenna Ferguson is ninth in the nation in three-point percentage at 43.2 percent.

WSU is ranked 17th nationally according to the Massey Ratings.

LAST TIME OUT
Wayne State posted a home win and a road loss last week against Purdue Northwest and at #21-Ferris State.

While hosting PNW, WSU made 50 percent of its shots (32-of-64), while the Pride connected on 44 percent (27-of-61).  From deep, the Warriors shot nearly 36 percent (5-of-14) compared to 38 percent from Purdue Northwest (9-of-24).  The largest difference came at the charity stripe, as the Green and Gold made 20-of-23 attempts and PNW converted 5-of-7.  Wayne State collected 40 rebounds and the Pride grabbed 25.

Taylor Thompson matched a career-high 33 points, to go with 10 rebounds and a career-best seven assists.

At FSU, Wayne State shot 49 percent from the field (28-of-57), including 34.5 percent from behind the arc.  The hosts made 29-of-66 shots (43.9 percent), while going 10-of-29 from deep.  WSU made 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) at the foul line, with Ferris State connecting on 90 percent of its attempts (18-of-20).

McKenna Ferguson led the Warriors with 20 points.
