Men's Fencing Competes at Danosi Open

DETROIT -- Multiple members of the Wayne State University men's fencing team competed at the annual Danosi Open in the Matthaei Center on Saturday.

Due to it being an open event, there are no team scores and each fencer competed as an individual.

In men's epee, freshman Justin Chenh (Falls Church, Va.), senior Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park / Celebration), senior Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), and senior Cameron King (Laurel, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) all saw action. 

Heim finished ast the runner-up, while Dinkins tied-for-third.  The two met in the semifinals, with Heim notching a 15-14 nailbiting victory.

Men's Epee Results
Heim - 8-3 overall (+12 in pools), Second
Dinkins - 7-2 overall (+12 in pools), Tied-for-Third
Chenh - 6-1 overall (+14 in pools), Ninth
King - 5-2 overall (+7 in pools), 10th

In the men's foil were freshman Josiah Atkinson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), Chenh, junior Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason), senior Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill), freshman Finn McIsaac (West Bloomfield, Mich.), sophomore Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.), sophomore Carlos Santos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids), and freshman Lukas Tsao (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

Tsao - 8-2 overall (+13 in pools), Tied-for-Third
Gatrell - 8-2 overall (+16 in pools), Tied-for-Third
McIsaac - 7-2 overall (+18 in pools), Sixth
Oronowicz - 6-2 overall (+14 in pools), 11th
Gneuhs - 4-4 overall (+1 in pools), 23rd
Santos - 3-5 overall, 27th
Atkinson - 3-5 overall, 28th
Chenh - 2-6 overall, 32nd

A trio of Warriors reached the semifinals in men's sabre.  Senior Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt / European International School of Alexandria) triumphed 15-8 over freshman Gabriel Dumoulin (Newtown, Conn.) in the finals bout, while freshman Connor Desautels (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow) finished tied-for-third.

Dumoulin - 8-1 overall (+19 in pools), Second
Desautels - 6-2 overall (+8 in pools), tied-for-third
Gwyd Perry (Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) - 6-2 overall (+9 in pools), fifth
Hunter Battisfore (Hancock, Mich. / Houghton) - 3-3 overall (+2 in pools), 10th
Brendan Goeddeke (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) - 2-4 overall, 12th

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Granville, Ohio, for the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships on Saturday, February 21, and Sunday, February 22.  This year's league championship will be held at Denison University in the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
