The Warrior highlights for day two included

QUOTING COACH LOFDAHL
"We had the best indoor GLIAC championships in the history of the program this weekend. The 98 points is an all-time program record and we took second place for the second year in a row. Overall, the coaching staff and I are just extremely proud of the efforts, mental toughness and grit the team showed over the past few days. It was a great, great performance by the team. We really had to work hard and earn every single point to get that second place spot because Saginaw Valley had a tremendous meet with a great team that ended up finishing one point behind us.
"Individually, on Saturday,
Ella Hufnagel had another tremendous effort in her second pentathlon as a true freshman. She finished in fifth place in a very competitive field with a score of 3,081 points, and that is the second best performance in Wayne State history, just as a true freshman. She was very impressive.
Nicole Warren did a very, very nice jump in the long jump and moved up a bit on her seed to get seventh place and two points. She came back on the second day with an unbelievable effort. I think her three or four best jumps of her life in the triple jump and won her first individual GLIAC title at 11.73 meters, which is No. 2 on our all-time list.
"We had 10 true freshmen competing out of our 30 athletes in the meet, which is pretty amazing.
Ava Peters, one of the true freshmen, took eighth place in the 5K, in the most competitive 5K field in many years, maybe ever, at the GLIAC meet with a 17:19, which is a school record for freshmen for at Wayne State.
"We qualified a ton of people for the finals of the 60 hurdles (three), the 400m dash (four) and the 200m dash (three). Then ending the meet on day one, our distance medley relay team had a tremendous effort from all four legs - Anna Godowski on the 1200, Hanna Bastiaansen in the 400,
Rachel Felstow in the 800 and
Emily Gordon in the 1600 anchor leg. There were four teams in contention with 2 laps to go, and Emily had the best kick and got the win over GVSU and Northern Michigan. It was the first time in Wayne State history we had won the distance medley relay.
"We had great momentum going into day two and picked up right where we left off with
Ava Steinhebel and
Sophie Pell tying for third place with several other jumpers in the high jump. Both great efforts, and it's unusual to have that many people tie for a place, but those two did a great job.
"On the throwing side of things, our shot putters did a really nice job.
Makayla Stewart and
Taylor Morrison, both just missed all-time PRs and improved on their places significantly. And Makayla was just off of making the finals in shot.
"In the 60 meter hurdles, great work by our three finalists.
Megan Zahnow was fourth;
Alex Harmer was sixth; and Kenisha Thomas was seventh - big points there as we outperformed our seeds. Second day in a row, lifetime PR for Alex and it's also her birthday. So that was exciting.
Annabelle Smith had a great comeback after a tough day in the long jump on the first day. She had a big PR to make the finals in the 60 meter dash and placed fifth, and she was not close to being a top-eight entry in the meet and ended up in fifth place as a senior. It was great.
"In the 400 meter dash, we scored the highest point total (17 points) of any one event.
Rachel Overgaard was seventh and
Keneisha Thomas was sixth.
Audrey Huizinga had an indoor PR with a great race for another true freshman finishing in fifth place.
Avery Wilson, for the second day in a row, and third or fourth time this season, shattered the school record in the 400m dash for a second-place finish. It was a very close race, down the stretch with a 55.73.
Emily Gordon took runner up in the 800m run for the second year in a row. Anna Godowski scored from the second heat for the second year in a row with an indoor PR. The 200m dash produced big points from our sprinters with
Lauren Wooten getting eighth and then two on the podium as
Hanne Bastiaansen finished in third place and
Rachel Overgaard took second.
The end of the meet was our 4x400m relay, which had Wilson, Bastiaansen, Huizinga, and Thomas in that order. It was a tremendous effort as they broke the school record, once again, at 3:47.32 and gave a top-five team in the country from GVSU, an extremely close competitive race. Finishing in second place to wrap-up the scoring at 98 points. Overall, it was a tremendous day. Great effort with great performances. In the past, we have generally been a better outdoor track team than an indoor track team, so we're very excited to be rolling into outdoor season coming up very shortly, but first the athletes will get a bit of a break to recover and then go right back to the grind.
