DETROIT -- Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and
Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) of the No. 16-Wayne State University baseball team were both honored by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) on Monday afternoon. Hill was named GLIAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career while Nash, also a first-time honoree, was crowned GLIAC Pitcher of the Week.
Both players were instrumental in leading Wayne State to a 6-0 record in Florida as well as a 16-2 beginning to the season, the best 18-game start in program history. The previous best was held by the 2023 squad at 15-3, a squad that went on to win 42 games (42-13), the program's single-season record.
Starting at the plate, in those six Warrior wins, Hill hit .478 (11-for-23) with six runs scored, one double, three home runs, nine RBI, four walks, and one stolen base. The junior slugged .913 while getting on-base at a .556 clip for a 1.469 OPS. Statistically, the outfielder ranks second in the league for OPS (1.283), second in slugging (.763), third in average (.441), fourth in on-base percentage (.520), fifth in total bases (45), and tied-for-fifth in home runs (4).
Making his fourth start of the season in No. 16-Wayne State's (NCBWA) 6-2 victory over Winona State on Wednesday, Nash was brilliant through seven innings pitched. Nash picked up his first pitching victory of the season (1-2 overall record) with two earned runs allowed, four hits, only one walk, and 11 strikeouts (career high) on 97 total pitches. Through 18.2 frames of work so far this spring, Nash carries a 4.82 ERA and and a batting average against of .229.
Hill, Nash and the rest of the team are set to make their 2026 home debut on Wednesday against Ohio Dominican.
