TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis program opened its 2026 fall slate at the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational, hosted by Toledo. WSU competed alongside Case Western Reserve, Grand Valley State, IU Indy, Tiffin and host Toledo throughout the three-day event.
QUOTING COACH MORROW
"The weekend went very well. It was a great tournament hosted by Toledo. They had different flights and different draws, and all the boys had some really great wins. In doubles, George and Sam won the tournament, going 4-0 in doubles that day. That was outstanding.
Sam Knowles had a very nice tournament in singles, as he went undefeated in his flight. Thomas also went undefeated in his flight as well.
Matthew Morrow and
Cole Anderson got a win in the main draw of the doubles tournament, and it was Matthew's first collegiate win, so that was also a highlight for us. All around, it was a lot of good tennis for us, and I am happy with the way we competed. I am very proud of the boys and looking forward to our next competition."
The Warriors collected 16 singles victories over the weekend, with several players putting together strong individual performances. Sophomore
Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG-Martigny) and junior
Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) each went undefeated in singles play in their respective flights, while junior
George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) also picked up multiple victories.
In doubles play, Day and Knowles captured the tournament title, going 4-0 on Saturday. The pair earned victories throughout the main draw before defeating Grand Valley State's Stephen Claassen and Larence Ivanov in the championship match.
Freshmen
Valentin Moraisin (Chatou, Yvelines, France / Passy Saint Honore) and
Matthew Morrow (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) each made an impact in their first collegiate competition. Moraisin picked up two singles victories, including wins over Toledo and Grand Valley State, while Morrow teamed with senior
Cole Anderson (Novi, Mich.) to earn a main-draw doubles victory. The win marked Morrow's first collegiate victory.
The Warriors also saw strong performances throughout the rest of the lineup, with
Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]),
Benjamin Hill (Duren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium),
Warren Gunnar (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) and Anderson each earning singles victories during the weekend.
