Wayne State vs. Ashland
Wayne State vs. Northwood
The Wayne State women's tennis team split its first two matches on day one of the Great Lake Intercollegiate Conference championship tournament at the MSU Tennis Facility and will play in tomorrow's third-place match. WSU defeated Ashland 5-3 in the first round before falling to Northwood 5-1 in the second round.
Entering the tournament as the fourth seed, WSU opened things up with the No. 2 doubles team of
Kristina Goranskaya and
McCall Monte picking up the Warriors' only point in doubles play with an 8-3 win over Corinne Pasley and Alexandra Ware.
Gill would set the tone in singles play for Wayne State by making quick work of Victoria Goudy, winning 6-1, 6-0. Goranskaya would follow with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph of her own in No. 2 singles.
Both Monte and Bradford were pushed in their singles matches, but as has been the case for much of the season, both would ultimately come away with wins in No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Monte's win came over Pasley 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 with Bradford's being a 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory against Ware.
Vuksanovic lost to Paige Cooper 6-0, 6-1 and Correa's match-up vs. Katherine Goudy went unfinished due to the match already being decided.
However, WSU was unable to make it a perfect day as its attempt to upset the top seeded Timberwolves came up short.
Goranskaya and Monte came away with Wayne State's lone victory of the match with an 8-3 win over Northwood's Darina Berkova and Raphaela Perisic.
Gill and Vuksanovic kept things close in No. 1 doubles before losing 8-6 to Ashley Neumann and Svenja Stephan. Playing together for the first time this year, Bradford and
Meghan Luzod lost 8-0 to Charlotte Sevin and Kim-Jenny Dinh.
Goranskaya lost her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-3 while neither Bradford nor Luzod were able to capture victories with 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2 losses respectively.
No. 1 Gill, No. 3 Vuksanovic and No. 4 Monte singles matches all went unfinished with Northwood already gaining the five points needed to claim a victory.
Wayne State will conclude the fall season on Sunday in the tournament's 3rd-place match at 10:00 a.m.
