Just as it did on Friday, the Wayne State women's tennis team once again found itself in a close match where one point would make the difference between a win and a loss. On Friday WSU came up short, but today the Warriors were able to win as they defeated Ferris State 5-4.
Wayne State improved its record to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Ferris State falls to 3-3 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC.
WSU's number one doubles team of
Sharon Gill and
Milena Vuksanovic lost 8-4 to Amy Ingle and Tiffany Rheynard, but Wayne State was able to bounce back and pick up a crucial two points in the remaining doubles matches.
The Warriors' number two team of
McCall Monte and
Kristina Goranskaya got the better of Tabitha Simpson and Natalie Diorio 8-2 while
Jennifer Bradford and
Debora Correa also recorded an 8-2 win over Melissa Flowers and Daniela Dimas in the third doubles match to give WSU a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Goranskaya and Monte are 7-2 this year.
Gill defeated Ingle 7-5, 6-3 in number one singles for her fourth-straight win. Goranskaya would also deliver WSU a point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Rheynard in the second flight.
Ferris State kept the match close with wins in the third, fourth and fifth singles matches. No. 3 Vuksanovic lost to FSU's Simpson 6-4, 6-2 and No. 4 Monte lost to Diorio 6-4, 6-1. Correa was unable to bust WSU out of its slump in the fifth singles match and lost 7-6 (5), 6-3 to Flowers.
However, Bradford was able to put away Dimas 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the sixth singles match for what would turn out to be the winning point for Wayne State.
Wayne State will return home to face Lake Superior State on Friday (Oct. 9) at 1:00 p.m.
