* SOUTHERN INDIANA STORYLINES
The Wayne State women's basketball team will begin its regular season on Sunday vs. Southern Indiana with a 1 p.m. tip-off at the Matthaei.
10 new players, eight freshmen and two transfers, will officially be taking the court as Warriors for the first time.
WSU was picked to finish fifth in the GLIAC South Division.
Southern Indiana enters the contest with a record of 1-2.
* SEASON OPENER HISTORY
WSU will be opening its season at home for just the second time in the last 10 seasons. Overall, Wayne State is 2-7 under head coach Gloria Bradley in its season opening games.
* ON THE BENCH
Bradley is entering her 10th season at WSU and 17th season overall. Bradley's record at Wayne State is 108-137 while her career record stands at 222-206.
Rick Stein in his 11th season as the head coach at Southern Indiana. The USI alum has guided the Screaming Eagles to a record of 169-124 during his tenure.
* ALL-TIME SERIES
Southern Indiana has had its way with Wayne State as the Screaming Eagles lead the series 6-0.
However, the games have been getting increasingly closer since the Warriors lost by 20 points (84-64) in the first meeting between the two teams in 1997.
The previous two games have been decided by a combined eight points; 72-69 in 2007 and 80-75 in 2008.
* YOUTH WILL BE SERVED
With a roster that includes 10 underclassmen and an average age of just under 19 years old, the 2009-10 edition of the Wayne State women's basketball team is the youngest squad that Bradley has coached at WSU with only the 2004-05 group, which had an average age of 19.35, coming close to matching their youthfulness.
* RETURNING WARRIORS
Senior guard Brooke Bowers, junior guard Chelsea Kouri and sophomore guard Felicia Thomas are all back for another season of Wayne State basketball.
Bowers needs 169 points to eclipse the 1,000 point mark and 28 three-pointers to set a school record for career three-pointers made.
Kouri has 51 games under her belt and finished last year leading the team in three-point shooting percentage at 32.9 percent (27-of-82).
Thomas played in 25 contests during her freshman campaign and averaged 16.8 minutes per game.
* EXHIBITION GAME RECAPS
WSU opened up its exhibition slate with a 79-47 loss at No. 10 Michigan State. Bowers led the Warriors with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Wayne State played its second tune-up game at Cleveland State and lost 69-36. Kouri had 13 points while freshmen forwards Deanna Crumpton and Chelsea Davis each had five rebounds.
* SCOUTING SOUTHERN INDIANA
Southern Indiana is led by junior guard Amie Newhart who is currently averaging 15.7 points per game (ppg).
Sophomore forward/center Ashton Mertens maintains the post for the Screaming Eagles with 9.3 points and 8.0 rebounds a game.
Southern Indiana has averaged 70.3 ppg in its three games this season. USI was picked to finish fourth in the East Division of the GLVC.
