After losing its first match of the season last Wednesday, the Wayne State women's tennis team bounced back Monday by defeating Saginaw Valley State 9-0. The Warriors (4-1, 3-1 GLIAC) won all 15 sets against the Cardinals (0-5, 0-5 GLIAC).
Because of poor weather, the match was moved from the WSU tennis courts to the Eastside Recreational Center.
The number two and three doubles teams of McCall Monte / Kristina Goranskaya and Jennifer Bradford / Debora Correa started Wayne State off in fine fashion with a pair of 8-0 wins to give the Warriors an early 2-0 lead.
WSU would earn its third point of the day when the number one doubles team of Sharon Gill and Milena Vuksanovic defeated Debra Hammond and Yunjiao Shangguan 8-2.
Gill recorded her eighth win of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Shangguan in number one singles. Goranskaya and Vuksanovic were both tested early, but ultimately won the second and third singles matches 6-4, 6-1.
Wayne State was able to keep its momentum going with Monte, Correa and Bradford all picking up 6-0, 6-0 wins in the fourth, fifth and sixth singles flights respectively.
Bradford has now won seven sets this season with five of them being 6-0 victories. Wayne State has won 10 of the last 12 matches against Saginaw Valley State.
WSU will begin a three-match road trip on Wednesday (Sept. 30) at Findlay. Play is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
