YPSILANTI, Mich. - In its final dual meet of the 2009-10 season, the Wayne State women's swimming and diving team lost to Eastern Michigan,
170-122, on Friday night at Jones Natatorium.
While the meet winner was determined after 14 of the 16 scheduled events, the Warriors did win three of those events, including the 200 medley relay (1:46.96) as the quartet of
Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.),
Courtney Roberts (Milan, Mich.),
Ana Gonzalez Pena (Gijon, Spain) and
Ashley Corriveau (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) bested Wayne State's prior NCAA championship qualifying time.
Roberts, who improved upon her prior NCAA “B” qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.10), provided nine of WSU's 15 points in the swim, as Gonzalez Pena took second (1:06.37) and
Maria Johnston (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) placed fourth (1:08.17).
Franklin came in first in the 100 backstroke (58.19) and fourth in the 200 back (2:11.94).
Others making national cuts included Corriveau, who placed second and lowered her “B” qualifier in the 100 free (52.50), and
Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), who late in the meet improved her “B” time in the 200 individual medley (2:08.98).
Stephanie Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) made a “B” cut in the 500 free by just .04 seconds (5:12.04).
Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) placed third in both the 500 free (5:03.48) and the 1000 free (10:21.16), and Hogle came in second in the 200 butterfly (2:06.42).
In diving action,
Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) finished fourth in both the one-meter (251.70) and three-meter (247.06) competitions.
Wayne State will host the 2010 GLIAC Championships at the Matthaei Aquatic Center beginning Wednesday, Feb. 10.
