Houghton, Mich. -- For the second match in a row, the score was
5-4, only this time the Wayne State women's tennis team came out on the wrong end, losing to host Michigan Tech Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors were ahead 2-1 going into the singles matches, but lost momentum as the Huskies won four of the six possible points.
Sharon Gill and
Kristina Goranskaya earned their 20th career win as doubles partners, defeating Nathalia Rondelli and Ploy Suthijindawong 8-4.
Gill was equally impressive in singles, blanking Suthijindawong 6-0, 6-0; however Goranskaya was upended by Natalia Lebedeva 6-3, 6-3.
Their teammates
Milena Vuksanovic and
McCall Monte beat Lebedeva and Asel Otunchieva 8-2 in No. 2 doubles. Vuksanovic would go on to lose her No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-4 to Rondelli, while Monte was defeated 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in her No.4 singles match with Anna Hegyi.
Debora Correa and
Jennifer Bradford lost a heartbreaker to Hegyi and Kira Eck 9-8 (4-0). In singles, Bradford outdueled Eck 6-2, 6-3, while Correa fell to Otunchieva 6-2, 6-4.
Wayne State (5-3, 5-3 GLIAC) will pick up play at Northwood this Wednesday. Michigan Tech moved to 4-4 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC.
