DETROIT -- The Wayne State women's tennis team (6-4, 6-4 GLIAC) earned a win for all the right reasons Friday afternoon.
Along with ending a two-game losing streak, the Warriors'
8-1 triumph over Findlay gave the five seniors on the squad a victory in the final home match of their careers.
“The Seniors have been great; just a great group of kids on and off the court,” coach
Sheila Snyder said. “They come in every day and work hard. They're great students. We had a lot of success and a lot of fun together.”
Senior
Sharon Gill undoubtedly endured numerous accolades during her years at WSU, most noticeably breaking the school record for most singles and doubles win in a career. She easily won both her matches against the Oilers, teaming with
Kristina Goranskaya to defeat Haley Dudon and Gina Solis 8-2 in No. 1 doubles, and then besting Dudon 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 singles.
Gill's roommate and fellow senior,
Debora Correa, also earned two victories. She partnered with
McCall Monte to in No. 2 doubles, blanking Kelsey Yoder and Holly Vietzke 8-0. Correa followed that with a straight set win over Vietzke in No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2. Unfortunately, Monte suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Yoder in No. 3 doubles 6-3, 2-6, 10-5.
Jennifer Bradford, who has been a staple in No. 6 singles during her four-year career, moved up a spot to No. 5, and came away with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over Amanda Mills.
Goranskaya defeated Solis 6-4, 6-1 in No. 2 singles, while
Caroline Gosman and
Tanya Joseph ousted Mills and Beverly Beavers 8-3 in No. 3 doubles. Joseph went on to win her No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-0 over Beavers.
The Warriors head to Tiffin Sunday for their last GLIAC match before the conference tournament, which will be held in Midland, Mich. from October 22-24.
