Seryy sets two pool records

DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team defeated Calvin College, 142-93, in its first dual meet of the season Friday night at the Matthaei.

Andrey Seryy (Saint-Petersburg, Russia) posted two NCAA “B” cuts, improved on another, and set a pair of pool records. He won the 200 freestyle in a “B” time of 1:40.32, breaking teammate Joaquin Abascal Gallegos' (Madrid, Spain) pool record set at the GLIAC Championships in February (1:41.43).

Seryy also made a “B” cut in the 50 free (20.33), leading off the 200 free relay with Kristian Larsen (Frederiksberg, Denmark), Nathan Hesche (Jackson, Mich.), and Abascal Gallegos. He broke the pool record of 20.39 set by Cole Tedhams of Indianapolis in 2005.

With a first-place time of 45.21 in the 100 free, Seryy improved upon his prior NCAA “B” cut.

Abascal Gallegos and Jimmy Lee (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) went one-two in the 100 backstroke and each garnered a “B” cut (52.20, 52.23). Jeff Grant (Belleville, Mich.) also claimed a national cut in three-meter diving (302.17).

Other winners Friday night included Oskar Nordstrand (Stockholm, Sweden) in the 1650 free (16:30.78), Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) in the 50 free (22.45), Kevin Galerneau (Washington, Mich./Eisenhower) in the 400 IM (4:11.80) and Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) in the 100 butterfly (53.37).

The 200 medley relay quartet of Lee, Victor, Hesche and Cameron Fryzel (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) also came in first place (1:36.80).

Wayne State will wrap up the 2010 calendar year at the three-day Nike Invitational, Dec. 2-4 at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
