DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team (8-2 overall, 7-2 in the GLIAC) tied the school record for overall wins in a season and league victories in a year with a 41-27 triumph over visiting Indianapolis (5-5 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at WSU's Adams Field.

The eight-win mark had been reached just three times prior to 2010 (1975, 1976 and 2008) and the seven conference victory plateau had been reached just once prior in 2008.

With both starting safeties out of the lineup due to injuries for the Warriors, the WSU offense stepped up its game to the tune of 441 yards of total offense in only 61 plays (7.2 yards per play average).

The Greyhounds went three-and-out on their first two possessions, before the Wayne State offense strung together an 11-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 25-yard field goal by freshman Stefan Terleckyj (Warren, Mich./Warren Mott).  The big play of the drive was a 36-yard reception by junior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) off a pass from sophomore quarterback Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey).

The Warrior defense limited Indianapolis to three first downs and 59 yards in the opening stanza resulting in three Greyhound punts.

WSU's offense took over with 1:44 left in the first period following a touchback, and drove 80 yards again with junior running back Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) scoring on a 16-yard jaunt on the fourth play of the second quarter.  The Warriors had five first downs on the drive and converted their only third down play as senior Ed Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) hauled in a 13-yard pass from Mohner.

After another three-and-out for UI, the Wayne State offense proceeded to gain 48 yards in nine plays with Terleckyj making a 20-yard field goal attempt.  Freshman running back Toney Davis (Muskegon Hts., Mich./Muskegon) had for carries for 14 yards on the drive.

The WSU offense and defense continued the same pattern after the Warriors had a 13-0 lead.  The defense turned in its fourth three-and-out of the first half, and the Wayne State offense responded with its fourth scoring drive in the first 27 minutes.  Following a Greyhound touchback on a punt, Sanders had a 30-yard reception on the first play and Burrell followed with a 48-yard catch to the UI two-yard line.  Davis scored on the next play completing a three-play, 80-yard drive in 1:18.

Indianapolis had an 11-play, 68-yard drive scoring on a Rob Doyle seven-yard pass to Ryan Forney with 24 seconds left before intermission.

Despite running two less plays in the opening 30 minutes, the WSU offense garnered 114 more yards (269 to 155).

Following WSU's lone punt of the game on the opening drive of the second half, UI drove 71 yards in eight plays with Doyle completing a 30-yard touchdown pass on third-and-10 to Mar'Quone Edmonds.

Leading just 20-14, the Warrior offense answered with a nine-play, 65-yard drive with Renel scoring on a nine-yard scamper.  Burrell had a 20-yard reception on a third-and-four, while freshman fullback Chet Privett (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren De La Salle) contributed a nine-yard reception.

UI's offense managed five yards in three plays and was forced to punt.  WSU freshman Austin Nelson (Haslett, Mich.), playing in his first collegiate game, came through and blocked the punt and recovered it himself at the UI 18.

On the very next play, Renel went untouched for an 18-yard touchdown run, his third of the contest.  Terleckyj's PAT gave the Warriors a 34-14 lead.

WSU's next drive ended with a fumble lost in the red zone, following another three-and-out by the Greyhounds.

Indianapolis pulled within 34-20 after a 92-yard drive on 10 plays.  Doyle completed all five of his pass attempts on the drive for 62 yards.

Once again, the Warrior offense responded with a touchdown drive of their own.  Renel jump started the drive with a 28-yard kickoff return.  Five consecutive Renel runs gained a total of 28 yards.  Privett had a 22-yard reception setting up Mohner's five-yard touchdown run, his first collegiate TD run.

Doyle completed six-of-seven passes on the ensuing drive leading UI to a 63-yard touchdown drive to conclude the scoring.  UI had a successful onside kick, but after a first down on a pass interference call, Doyle had a completion for minus two yards, followed by back-to-back Warrior sacks from junior linebacker Raleigh Ross (Detroit, Mich./Crockett) and senior defensive end Daunte Akra (Detroit, Mich./Kettering).  On fourth-and-21, Doyle had a 19-yard completion but Edmonds was stopped by freshman safety Antwon Robinson (Southfield, Mich.) two yards short.

Junior running back Jordan Kidd (Milford, Mich.) had two carries for 13 yards to run out the clock.

Both teams had 24 first downs in the contest and the time of possession was nearly even (UI - 30:02; WSU - 29:58), but the Warriors were five-of-nine on third down compared to four-of-13 for the Greyhounds.

Renel led all rushers with 177 yards (and three touchdowns) on 27 attempts.  He did not have a negative carry the entire game.  Klay Fletcher led UI with 63 yards on 13 carries.

WSU held a 235-82 advantage in rushing.

Mohner completed 11-of-16 for 206 yards and was not sacked in the contest.  Chris Mills started for Indianapolis and passed for 67 yards on seven-of-12.  Doyle relieved the injured Mills and passed for 237 yards on 21-of-27 with 151 yards coming in the fourth quarter.

Edmonds had a game-high 11 receptions for 131 yards and two scores to lead UI.  Forney made seven catches for 103 yards and two more TDs for the Greyhounds.

Burrell led WSU with three receptions for 104 yards.

Wayne State will close out the regular season with a noon kickoff next Saturday at Findlay.

WSU Notes:

Renel recorded the fifth-highest single-game all-purpose yard total in school history with 319 (177 rushing, 17 receiving, 51 kickoff return, 74 punt return).

Renel surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing plateau with a 12-yard run on the second play of the second quarter.

Burrell had his third career 100-yard receiving game.

In addition to Nelson making his collegiate debut, offensive linemen #T.J. Arancibia# (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) and Rocky Mikulec (Milford, Mich.) also made their collegiate debuts on WSU's final drive.

Terleckyj had his second consecutive 11-point game with two field goals and five-for-five on PATs.  He had made his last four field goal attempts and six of his last seven attempts.  Terleckyj is also 39-for-39 on PATs this year.

Junior linebacker Jordan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) and Robinson tied for team-high honors in tackles with nine.  Robinson also contributed two pass break-ups.

Ross had a sack among his seven tackles, while Akra had four tackles (3-1) including a sack plus two quarterback hurries.

WSU recorded seven tackles for minus 34 yards including four sacks for minu 23 yards.
