Romeoville, Ill.- The Wayne State men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season Thursday night with a
6-3 regional win over host Lewis. Head coach
Bryan Morrow called the victory a complete team win as all six of the Warriors who participated on Thursday earned at least one victory in either singles or doubles play.
The win improves WSU's record to 1-1 while the defeat was Lewis' first loss of the season (3-1).
WSU began the evening taking two out of the three doubles matches. The pairing of sophomore
Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France) and
Britton Steele (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) grabbed an impressive 9-2 victory over Lewis' Uno Lapimaa and Lorenz Pestinger for WSU's first point.
The Warriors No. 2 doubles team of junior
Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) and freshman
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) dropped a close 8-6 decision to the Flyers' Mike Wojnarowski and Tonis Irdoja.
A mix of youth and experience proved to be a great combination in the third doubles match as senior
Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle) and freshman
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) joined forces to secure an 8-6 win against Nick Heidenfelder and Jesse Hardacre.
Leading 2-1 heading into singles play, Wayne State was able to clinch its first win of the year by taking singles matches three through six in straight sets.
Ducret and Szydlowski earned their first wins of the season with 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-1 wins respectively out of the No. 3 and No. 5 positions.
A 6-4, 6-3 singles win kept Gamarra's perfect record in tact while freshman
Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) rounded out the WSU attack with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the sixth flight to notch his first triumph of his career.
Moulin and Steele lost 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-3 in the first and second singles slots.
The Warriors will be looking for their second win in as many days Friday as they continue their season-opening five match road trip against Indianapolis at 5 p.m.
