Toledo, Ohio – The Wayne State men's tennis team's three-match winning streak came to an end Saturday night at Toledo as the Rockets defeated WSU
6-1. The Warriors' lone point of the night came from sophomore
Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France) who won his third consecutive match at the No. 1 singles position.
WSU's first two doubles teams both lost 8-5 as Moulin and
Britton Steele (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) lost to Toledo's pairing of Nutthavit Likitkumch and Aleksandar Elezovic at No. 1 doubles while freshmen
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) and senior
Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle) were defeated for the first time this season by Sven Burus and Leo Sarria in the second doubles flight.
At third doubles, the Rockets' Terence Weigand and Bryant Dudzik upended the freshmen team of
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and
Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) 8-1.
Moulin earned WSU's first and last point by defeating Likitkumch 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). The win is Moulin's eighth of the year. The Lyon, France native is 7-3 in his last 10 matches.
Steele dropped his first set to Elezovic at No. 2 singles 7-5 before falling in the second set 6-1. Ducret suffered a similar fate in the third flight to Sarria 6-4, 6-3.
Gamarra's four-match singles winning streak also came to an end on Saturday as Dudzik earned a 6-3, 6-4 win. The loss drops Gamarra's record to 4-1 on the year.
After winning three matches last week at the sixth flight, Groszek moved up the fifth spot to lose 6-3, 6-1 to Leonardo Henriques.
The night ended with No. 6 Turnbull losing a three-set thriller to Weigand 2-6, 6-4, 10-1.
WSU will now head to Florida for its spring break trip. Its first match will be on March 11 against Bethel (Tenn.).
