WSU Defeats Lake Superior 6-3 For Fifth-Straight Win

Detroit, Mich. – The Wayne State men's tennis team increased its winning streak to five games thanks to clutch victories in its singles matches on Saturday as WSU defeated Lake Superior 6-3. The Warriors are now 9-3 overall and 2-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Wayne State earned its only doubles point of the day in the second flight when the tandem of junior Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich., Canton) and freshman Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) defeated Lake Superior's Robert Nelson and Brandon Clayton 8-5.

Sophomore Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France)and graduate student Britton Steele (Novi, Mich., Detroit Catholic Central (Mich. State))saw their seven-match win streak snapped by Razvan Mag and Pawel Wegrzyn 9-7. WSU's No. 3 doubles pairing of senior Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich., Warren De La Salle) and freshman Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador, Unidad Educativa Javier) also came up short, losing 8-2 to Travis Toth and Sergiu Laza.

Moulin avenged his doubles loss by defeating Mag 6-0, 6-2 for his seventh consecutive win. Moulin is 9-1 in his last 10 matches.

Ducret continued his terrific freshman season by picking up his ninth singles win of the year, upending Wegrzyn 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.

After losing for just the third time this season from the fourth flight a day ago, Gamarra got back on track against the Lakers with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Clayton.

Szydlowski made the most of his first singles match in 14 days, besting Toth 6-0, 6-1. After taking the first set 7-6 (6-3), senior Roberto Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico, Preparaforia del Estado de Comitan (Seward County)) finished off Nelson 6-1 in the second set from the sixth flight. Gomez now has an overall record of 7-2 this season and is a perfect 3-0 in the sixth spot.

WSU's only singles loss came when Steele was defeated by Laza 6-3, 6-3.

Wayne State will look to stay perfect in the GLIAC on Wednesday vs. Tiffin at 12:30 p.m.
