BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich - The Wayne State women's tennis team continued to impress Saturday afternoon when the Warriors defeated Oakland 7-0 for WSU's fifth-straight win and third consecutive shutout. The victory pushes Wayne State's record to 13-5 overall.
In the closest match of the day, junior Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont., Academie Ste. Cecile) and sophomore Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario, Northview Heights Secondary School) pulled off an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Caitlin Young and Karen Karoub. Since teaming up earlier this spring, Gill and Goranskaya are 5-0.
The No. 2 doubles pairing of juniors Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia, Uros Predic Secondary School) and McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., Gross Pointe South) captured their fourth victory as a team by defeating Jackie Dinicu and Gabrielle Gogas 8-2.
The Warriors' most experienced team, juniors Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Colegio Padre Eustaquio) and Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich., Mumford) earned their 10th win of the season by besting Amanda Pettey and Caryn Shermetaro 8-4. Bradford and Correa are 8-2 in their last 10 matches.
Since Oakland was the home team, the match was played under Division I rules with the majority winner of doubles play earning only one point. The singles contests saw more of the same for Wayne State.
Gill and Goranskaya both extended their winning streaks to seven matches with 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-3 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively.
A trio of Warriors also won their fifth consecutive singles matches as Vuksanovic (6-2, 6-3), Monte (6-1, 6-2) and Correa (6-0, 6-2) were victorious in the third, fourth and fifth flights.
Not to be outdone, Bradford earned an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
Wayne State will play its final home match of the season on Tuesday (March 30) against Niagara at 12:00 p.m.
