Men's Tennis Defeats Tiffin 6-3

DETROIT, Mich. – The Wayne State men's tennis team capped off its longest homestand of the season with a win on Wednesday, defeating Tiffin 6-3. The victory improves WSU's record to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The triumph was the third consecutive win for the Warriors against the Dragons. Wayne State's seven-match win streak is its longest streak in the past five years.

The Wayne State doubles lineup returned to form, posting three wins with an 8-0 shutout by the No. 3 team of Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) and Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle) over Ryan Toporowsky and Brian Coffman being the highlight.

WSU's No. 1 doubles team of Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France) and Britton Steele (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) as well as the No. 2 doubles team of Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) earned 8-4 wins to send Wayne State into singles play ahead 3-0.

However, Tiffin would fight back and split the singles matches with the Warriors 3-3.

Moulin continued his winning ways at No. 1 singles with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Luiz Carvalho. Moulin pushed his personal win streak to 10 matches with his win on Wednesday.

Wayne State's other two victories in singles play came from Turnbull and Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child). Turnbull was a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 winner in the fifth flight against Coffman while Groszek earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Santiago Revelo. Groszek is yet to lose from the sixth flight this season.

Steele (6-0, 6-3), Ducret (4-6, 6-3, 6-1) and Gamarra (7-6, 6-1) all came up short against Tiffin.

Wayne State will take a quick break from GLIAC play on Thursday for a match at Aquinas College. Last season, the Saints defeated WSU 6-3. The two schools will begin play at 3 p.m.
