Midland, Mich. – For the second straight year, the Wayne State University women's tennis team (16-5, 6-3 GLIAC) claimed an NCAA Tournament win, as the Warriors defeated Ferris State
5-2 Thursday morning in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Tournament.
Wayne State will play the winner of this afternoon's Northwood - St. Joseph's match in round two tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for the right to advance to the round of 16.
WSU picked up two key points in doubles play thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
In the first flight,
Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and
Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ont./Northview Heights Secondary School) remained perfect on the season by defeating FSU's Amy Ingle and Tiffany Rheynard 8-3.
McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Gross Pointe South) and
Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) were 8-2 winners at second doubles over Natalie Diorio and Mary Coleman.
The Bulldogs earned their first point of the match at No. 3 doubles when Daniela Dimas and Melissa Flowers downed
Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and
Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) in a tough 8-6 decision.
Gill and Goranskaya continued their spectacular play in singles competition as both women extended their personal winning streaks to 10 matches to give Wayne State its third and fourth points of the day.
Gill, whose record is now 21-3, bested Ingle 6-1, 6-3 from the first flight while Goranskaya came away with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory over Rheynard at second singles. Goranskaya is now just one win shy of her second 20–win season in as many years.
Wayne State picked up the decisive fifth point when Monte defeated Flowers 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Monte is currently enjoying her own eight-match win streak.
Ferris State's second point of the match came from the fifth flight where Diorio upended Correa 6-2, 6-3.
Looking ahead to round two, Wayne State lost two matches to Northwood during the regular season and did not play St. Joseph's or share any common opponents with the Pumas.
