SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (15-8, 5-2 GLIAC) season came to an end on Friday as Rockhurst defeated WSU
5-0 in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament. The Warriors' 15 wins are the most for the program since 2004.
WSU dropped all three of its doubles matches and was unable to recover in singles play.
The Warriors first and second doubles pairings both fell 8-4 as
Bertrand Moulin and
Britton Steele lost to Ben and Zach Newell while
Eric Szydlowski and
Thomas Ducret were defeated by Rockhurst's John Lazenby and Victor Klintcharov.
Wayne State's No. 3 team of
Kevin Turnbull and
Oscar Gamarra were downed 8-3 by Paulo Bombonatti and R. Gauto-Mariotti.
Singles competition saw Steele lose his match in the second flight 6-0, 6-1 to Klintcharov. Wayne State's
Roberto Gomez also came up short in his fifth-flight match, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Gauto-Mariotti.
With the win, Rockhurst advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and will face the winner of the Drury – Michigan Tech match.
Friday was the final collegiate matches for senior's Turnbull, Gomez and Steele who is a graduate student.
