Tiffin, Ohio
-- The Wayne State University football team (2-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) recorded the second most points in a game in school history with a 63-14 triumph at Tiffin University (1-1 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors, who start a season 2-0 for the first time since 1976, scored a school record 42 points in the second quarter to blow open a 7-0 WSU lead after 15 minutes.

On Nov. 20, 1937, Wayne University scored a school mark of 65 points in a 65-0 win over Hillsdale to conclude a 6-2 season under the legendary Joseph Gembis. WU defeated Akron (19-13), Louisville (32-0), Central Michigan (18-0), Eastern Michigan (7-0) and Buffalo (23-6) prior to the contest against the Chargers.

Redshirt freshman running back Toney Davis (Muskegon Hts., Mich.) rushed 14 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns to lead a Warrior offense that rushed 53 times for 287 yards. Junior Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) gained 84 yards on 18 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) completed 7-of-13 passes for 164 yards and one score, a 65-yard scoring toss to junior Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) early in the second quarter which gave WSU a 21-0 lead.

Senior cornerback Stan Thornton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow) returned his 13th career interception 44 yards for WSU's fourth TD of the contest.

Burrell recorded his first collegiate 100-yard receiving game with five receptions for 131 yards.

WSU held a 461-223 advantage in total offense, limiting the Dragons to 27 rushing yards on 31 attempts.

Wayne State continues GLIAC play next Saturday at Michigan Tech with a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Notes:

Wayne State starts the year 2-0 for the first time since 1976. That year the Tartars won at RFK Stadium (31-14 over Howard) and 29-0 against Northwood, before going 3-0 with a 16-9 triumph at Valparaiso.

The 63 points scored is the second-most in school history, behind the 65 posted in a 65-0 win over Hillsdale on Nov. 20, 1937. That season Wayne University defeated Akron, Louisville, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Buffalo with the only losses coming at Michigan State and to Toledo.

WSU set a school mark by scoring 42 points in the second quarter in a span of 12:41. Included in the scoring barrage was 21 points in a span of 2:48.

Junior Josh Renel tied for the sixth longest non-scoring kickoff return in school history with his 69-yard runback in the third quarter.

Freshman place-kicker Stefan Terleckyj (Warren, Mich./Warren Mott) set a school mark by making all nine PAT attempts. Only twice has a place-kicker made eight PAT in a game (Dick Lisabeth on Oct. 27, 1951 vs. Omaha, and Robert Guindi vs. Northwood on Oct. 27, 1979).

Renel also had his second consecutive three-TD game, while redshirt freshman Toney Davis (Muskegon Hts., Mich./Muskegon) had his second straight 100-yard game rushing 14 times for 140 yards and three scores.

Junior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) had his first 100-yard receiving contest with five catches for 131 yards.

Junior Danny McKae (Dearborn) recorded his first collegiate touchdown on a 10-yard pass from senior Zack George (Deshler, Ohio/Patrick Henry) in the fourth quarter.

The WSU defense limited Tiffin to 27 yards rushing on 31 attempts which included four quarterback sacks.

Senior Stan Thornton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow), who wears No. 13, recorded his 13th career interception and took it 44 yards for WSU's fourth touchdown of the game, and his third career interception return for a TD.
