Columbus, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (4-12 overall, 4-6 GLIAC), with a reduced roster, persevered and recorded a
72-55 road win at Ohio Dominican (4-12 overall, 2-8 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors dressed eight players for the contest but unselfish play resulted in 11 assists in 21 made field goals.
In a sluggish start by both teams, the largest lead in the first nine minutes was four points (9-5) by the Panthers. ODU led by as many as five on three different occasions (14-9, 16-11 and 18-13) before back-to-back buckets by freshman
Alison Bouman (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) and sophomore
Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) cut the deficit to one.
The hosts again led by five (25-20) following a triple by Abby Glover 93 seconds before intermission. WSU ended the first half on a 6-0 run for a 26-25 halftime lead.
The Warriors had balanced scoring in the first half with sophomore
Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) leading the way with eight and six rebounds. Bouman and
Paige Sickmiller (Romeo, Mich.), who drained two three's, each had six points in the opeing 20 minutes.
Wayne State came out and scored 16 points in the first five minutes of the second half to grab a seven-point advantage at 42-35. Sickmiller started the second half with a four-point play as she was fouled on a made triple. Colbert tallied five consecutive points, followed by a three-pointer from senior
Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich.) and Sickmiller nailed her fourth triple of the contest.
WSU's lead remained between three and seven, until Colbert hit a pair of free throws at the 7:36 mark for a 52-44 lead.
The Panthers were able to cut the Warrior lead to five (52-47), but WSU responded with a 6-0 run which included a Bouman jumper, two foul shots by freshman
Lauryn Robinson (Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington) and a Colbert lay-up.
Wayne State's lead was never less than eight the rest of the contest, as WSU's final 14 points came from the charity stripe,
Colbert had her second consecutive Saturday double-double with game-high totals of 21 points and 11 rebounds. She also contributed five steals. Sickmiller had 13 points and Kouri finished with 10 as WSU shot 45 percent (21-of-47) from the floor and 86 percent (24-of-28) from the foul line.
Glover had a team-best 13 points for ODU, who out-rebounded the Warriors 38-35, but only shot 27 percent (16-of-59) from the field.
Wayne State will play the middle game of its three-game road trip Thursday night at Ashland.
