ALLENDALE, Mich. - In a tightly contested dual meet between the top two teams at last year's GLIAC Championships, the Wayne State women's swimming and diving team edged Grand Valley State,
152.5-147.5, on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors, who won the conference title with a 118-point advantage over the Lakers last February, took a slim lead into the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay.
Both foursomes posted identical first-place times of 1:37.85, as
Ashley Corriveau,
Ana Gonzalez Pena, Christina Busquets Garcia and
Sara Franklin preserved the WSU overall victory.
Corriveau, competing for the first time this season, won the individual 100 free (53.86) and finished second in both the 50 free (25.00) and the 200 free (1:58.22).
Making her collegiate debut,
Carol Azambuja swam the third leg of the first place 200 medley relay (1:48.45) with Franklin, Gonzalez Pena and Busquets Garcia. Azambuja also won the 200 backstroke (2:09.60) and finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:14.25).
Other first-place finishers Saturday included
Catherine Leix in the 500 (5:09.20) and 1000 free (10:35.25), Franklin in the 100 back (57.83), and
Kayla Scott in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.51).
Paige Kortman and
Cassie Chetosky won the one-meter (260.10) and three-meter (278.25) diving competitions, respectively.
Wayne State will travel to Lewis University for a GLIAC dual meet next Friday and Saturday.
