DETROIT - In its first home meet of the 2011-12 season, the Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team defeated Ashland University,
147-87, on Friday night at the Matthaei.
Junior diver
Emily Mitzelfeld earned her NCAA qualifications on both the one-meter (260.25) and three-meter boards (267.07), finishing first and second, respectively.
Carly Sevald won the three-meter and improved her national cut (299.25).
Carol Azambuja led the field in both the 200 individual medley (2:07.45) and the 100 freestyle (50.98), earning an NCAA “”B” qualifier in the former and improving her cut in the latter. She also broke the 100 free pool record of 51.82 set by Indianapolis' Maura Donahue in 2010.
Catherine Leix was also a two-time winner on Friday, leading the pack in the 200 freestyle (1:56.08) and the 200 butterfly (2:13.27).
The Warriors swept the top three spots in the 1000 freestyle, as
Marissa Swartz came in first (10:47.75) followed by
Alycen Wiacek (10:54.64) and
Kelsey Dischler (10:57.11).
Other first-place swims were turned in by
Alex Malfroid in the 200 backstroke (2:09.36), and
Kaylee Dolinski, who won the 500 freestyle (5:11.61) and placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.50).
The victorious 200 medley relay of
Cristina Busquets Garcia,
Kayla Scott, Azambuja and
Ashley Corriveau came in with a time of 1:47.95.
Wayne State's next competition is Dec. 2-3 at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
