Men's Basketball Cruises To 96-50 Victory Over Marygrove

Udanoh records double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (1-1 overall) rebounded from last Thursday's setback to top-ranked Bellarmine by posting a 96-50 home court victory Monday evening over Marygrove College (3-4 overall) at the Matthaei.

The Warriors scored the first 10 points of the contest and held the visiting Mustangs without a field goal for the first five minutes.  Senior center Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) and junior guard Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) each scored four points during WSU's opening run.

A jumper by MC's Omar Thomas at the 14:49 mark made it 14-3, but Hollingsworth and senior guard Stacey Waters (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) answered with back-to-back triples.  Justin Armstrong scored down low to make it a 15-point game at 20-5 with 12:18 left before intermission.  Wayne State went on an 8-4 run to open a 19-point advantage at 28-9 with just over eight minutes remaining.

WSU closed out the first half on a 10-4 run giving the hosts a 46-21 lead at the break.

Three Warriors scored in double figures during the first 20 minutes led by 14 points from junior forward Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance).  Udanoh had 12 with Hollingsworth chipping in with 11.

WSU held a decisive 30-4 advantage in points in the paint during the first half while shooting 49 percent (18-of-37) from the floor.  Meanwhile, Marygrove shot 30 percent (7-of-23) from the field.

Wayne State scored eight of the first nine points of the second half for a 54-22 lead with 16:20 remaining.  WSU outscored the Mustangs 42-28 the rest of the way.

Udanoh had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace five Warriors in double figures.  Larkin nearly had a double-double with 18 points and nine boards, while Hollingsworth contributed 16 points, five assists and five steals.  Waters tallied 15 points off the bench and sophomore forward Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern) added 10 points.  Junior guard Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) had nine assists, six points and three steals for WSU.

Michael Jackson led Marygrove with 10 points off the bench.

Wayne State forced 25 turnovers and had 23 assists to 14 turnovers.  The Warriors held a 37-28 advantage on the boards, while limiting the Mustangs to 35 percent (17-of-48) from the floor.  WSU shot 70 percent (19-of-27) in the second half and finished the contest at 58 percent (37-of-64).

The Warriors travel to Springfield, Mo. for the 2011 Comfort Inn/Drury Thanksgiving Classic.  WSU will play Northeastern State at approximately 8:15 p.m. Eastern on Friday.  Wayne State will face tournament host Drury at 6 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
