Football Wins 28-19 at Indianapolis

Warriors remain tied for first in the GLIAC.

Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Wayne State University football team (8-2 overall, 7-2 GLIAC) remained in a first place tie in the GLIAC with a 28-19 road victory Saturday night at Indianapolis (7-3 overall, 6-3 GLIAC).

Indianapolis went 74 yards on the opening drive which culminated in a six-yard touchdown pass from Chris Mills to Mar'Quone Edmonds.

The Warriors tied the game late in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by senior Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams), which completed a 12-play, 48-yard drive which took 6:31.  It was Renel's 24th career rushing touchdown.

Renel returned the second half kickoff 28 yards setting up the Warrior offense at its own 43.

WSU took its first lead of the game early in the third quarter on a 32-yard touchdown pass from junior Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) to senior Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) on a third-and-11.  The 57-yard scoring drive took 5:24.  A key play on the drive was when Mohner drew the Greyhound defense offsides on a third-and-eight and sophomore running back Toney Davis (Muskegon Hts., Mich./Muskegon) followed with a nine-yard run on third-and-three.

The Warrior defense stepped up and stopped Indianapolis on a fourth-and-one at the WSU 34 as Mills went under center for the first time in the contest and fumbled the snap.

Wayne State drove 66 yards on the ensuing drive to increase its lead to 21-7 on a one-yard touchdown run by Davis.  Burrell made a great adjustment on a pass and hauled in a 40-yard reception on a third-and-11 from the UI 41.  Davis scored his first touchdown of the game on the very next play.

After each team punted, the Greyhounds scored on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Mills to Ryan Forney completing a four-play, 80-yard drive. Wayne State's Jon Robinson blocked the extra point attempt following a false start penalty on the Greyhounds.

The Warriors sealed the victory with a 15-play, 70yard drive, that took 8:33 and resulted in a one-yard touchdown run by Davis.  On the drive, Davis had 10 carries for 45 yards, while Renel added five rushing attempts for 25 yards.

Forney completed the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown reception on the last play of the game.

Davis rushed for a game-high 120 yards, while Renel added 114 yards on the ground.  Indianapolis was limited to 60 rushing yards in 22 attempts.

Mohner completed 11-of-17 passes for 143 yards. Burrell led WSU with seven catches for 120 yards.  Mills passed for 269 yards on 26-of-41 with Forney grabbing 12 passes for 130 yards.

Jeremy Jones also recorded his 14 career interception to aid the Warrior defense.

Wayne State will host Findlay next Saturday at noon to conclude the regular season.
