Detroit, Mich. - Making the long journey to the Upper Peninsula for matches with Michigan Tech University and Lake Superior State University, the 36th-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (10-4, 3-0 GLIAC) opened with a
6-3 victory over the Huskies (4-7, 0-3 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon.
For the second straight match, the Warriors fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, but were able to bounce back, winning five of six from the Huskies in the singles portion that saw half the bouts go to three sets.
In those three-set matches,
Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont./Assumption College HS) took down Anders Sandholm in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), while his doubles counterpart,
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville), defeated James Konarske in the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) bested Luke Stupar, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in No. 1 singles.
Ducret and
Alec Attala (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) picked up the squads lone win in No. 2 doubles. The tandem won in a tiebreaker over Andrew Kremkow and Sandholm, 9-8 (8-6).
Attala, walked away with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chris Verhulst in No. 6 singles.
Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) remained unbeaten (7-0) in singles this season following a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Kremkow in the No. 5 position.
Gill and Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville) lost a heartbreaker to Stupar and Doug Yossida in No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (7-5), while
Matt Fisher (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) and
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) suffered a 9-7 setback to Konarske and Verhulst in the No. 3 spot, 9-7.
Gamarra fell to Yossida in No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
The Warriors travel to Lake Superior for a meeting with the Lakers tomorrow at Noon.
