The Wayne State University women's softball team will hold its inaugural 'Strike Out Cancer' event during the doubleheader vs. Lake Erie College on Friday, April 29th starting at 4:00 p.m. The event will be held in conjunction with other "W" Week festivities and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) national Strike Out Cancer Initiative.
Since starting the Cancer initiative more than 10 years ago, NFCA membership teams have raised thousands of dollars to support the fight against cancer. In addition to fundraised dollars, this initiative has provided a platform to raise awareness for breast cancer as well as support for women's cancer research.
Leading up to the April 29th event, the WSU Department of Athletics will be selling pink WSU ball caps that feature a green 'W'. The hats as well as pink t-shirts that highlight the Wayne State logo inside the breast cancer ribbon decal will be available for sale during the contests on Friday. In addition, the softball team will be asking for donations for every hit they record during Friday's doubleheader. Proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Race for The Cure initiative.
Cindy Sulad, a staff member at Wayne State, will be honored for her spirited battle against cancer, by throwing out the first pitch on April 29.
The WSU softball team will wear pink socks during the twinbill vs. the Storm, while the WSU baseball team will be wearing pink wristbands when they host Grand Valley State on Saturday and Sunday, April 30-May 1.
