Men's Tennis' Win Streak Halted At Five

Warriors fall 5-4 to Grand Valley on Sunday at PeachTree Tennis Club

Clinton Twp., Mich. - The 37th-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (12-5, 4-1 GLIAC) suffered its first conference setback of the season and had its win streak snapped at five following a 5-4 defeat to Grand Valley at PeachTree Tennis Club on Sunday.

The Warriors fell in two of the three doubles match and split with the Lakers in singles play.

Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador / Unidad Educativa Javier) moved his singles record to 12-4 on the season after besting Benny Delgado-Rochas, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 spot. Gamarra teamed with Alec Attala (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) in No. 3 doubles and earned the Warriors lone win, defeating Delgado-Rochas and Kazdan, 8-6.

Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile), returning to the WSU lineup after missing the last three matches, triumphed 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) over Andrew Darrell in No. 3 singles. FitzGerald partnered with Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) in No. 2 doubles and suffered a 9-7 setback to Darrell and Philipp Claus. Ducret went on to fall 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in No. 1 singles to Marc Roesslein. 

Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville) won his fifth match in the last six tries, earning a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Bryan Hodges in No. 5 singles. In No. 1 doubles, Joseph and Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont./Assumption College HS) came up short, falling to Roesslein and Trey Keating, 8-5. Gill only lost for the second time in his last six singles matches after Clauss defeated him in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) dropped his No. 6 singles match with Kazdan, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

The Warriors continue GLIAC play on Tuesday when they Ferris State University at 12:30 p.m. at PeachTree Tennis Club in Clinton Twp.
