DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team lost a
159-141 result to Grand Valley State University in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
Kyle Taylor and
Andrey Seryy were both two-time individual winners for the Warriors. Seryy also joined two relays, including the 200 medley relay which opened the meet with a second-place finish (1:33.26) and an NCAA B cut. The Lakers' winning time of 1:32.14 set a new Matthaei pool record.
Taylor was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:43.86) and the 500 freestyle (4:45.60) He also placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (48.44).
Seryy led the field in the 50 freestyle (20.47) and the 100 freestyle (44.59). He also led off the 200 free relay which ended the meet out-touching GVSU by .17 seconds for the victory (1:24.31).
In addition to contributing on the two relays. Newcomer
Lucas Fernandez Vilanova placed second in the 100 backstroke (51.49) and third in the 200 backstroke (1:53.22), picking up NCAA B cuts in both events.
Joaquin Abascal Gallegos, who won the 200 breaststroke (2:05.60), was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (58.25) and the 200 individual medley (1:54.29).
The WSU diving corps excelled on the three-meter board, as
Dylan Szegedi (311.03),
Darrin Driesenga (309.98) and
Jeff Grant (306.15) went one-two-three and all earned NCAA national qualifiers. The trio also took the top three spots in the one-meter competition, led by Grant (267.30).
Wayne State will compete against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 20 in Ypsilanti.
