Women's Swimming & Diving Earns 30-Point Win Over GVSU


DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team defeated Grand Valley State University, 165-135, on Saturday afternoon to earn its sixth dual meet victory in the last seven years against GVSU.

The meet was bookended by two relay triumphs for the Warriors, as they opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:48.41).  Wayne State closed the afternoon with a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.21).

Kayla Scott was victorious in both breaststroke swims (1:06.19; 2:25.55) and finished second behind teammate Kei Cze Prentis in the 200 individual medley (2:13.43).

Carol Azambuja was a three-time individual winner Saturday, leading the pack in the 100 backstroke (58.47), 200 backstroke (2:06.52) and 50 freestyle (24.23).

In addition to winning the 200 IM (2:13.24), Prentis placed third in the 200 back (2:10.73) and the 200 free (1:58.10).

Leading the WSU distance swimmers were Brittany Wilkins, who came in second in the 1000 free (10:41.09), and Kaylee Dolinski, the runner-up in both the 200 free (1:57.18) and 500 free (5:13.40).

Newcomer Gloria Martinez Perez had a busy afternoon in her first meet with the Warriors.  In addition to joining both relays, she won the 100 butterfly (58.67) and took second in the 100 freestyle (53.57).

Paige Kortman and Emily Mitzelfeld improved their NCAA qualifiers in one-meter diving, finishing first (273.67) and third (260.55) respectively.  Carly Sevald (270.37) and Kortman (262.35) placed second and third on the three-meter board.

Wayne State will compete against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 20 in Ypsilanti.
