Houghton, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (14-7 overall, 11-4 GLIAC) extended the GLIAC's longest active winning streak to five games with a
60-54 triumph Saturday afternoon at Michigan Tech University (11-10 overall, 9-5 GLIAC).
The Warriors are second in the GLIAC South Division and third overall with four games remaining on the 2011-12 regular-season schedule.
WSU led the first 10 minutes of the contest, even building up a 16-8 advantage as junior forward
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) made three three-pointers in less than two minutes and junior guard
Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) added five points of his own.
The Huskies answered back with eight consecutive points, including two triples by Ben Stelzer, to knot the game at 18. A Mike Hojnacki three-pointer gave MTU its only lead at 26-24, but Larkin made a lay-up in the final 10 seconds before intermission to tie the game at 26.
Senior center
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower) and Larkin each made baskets to start the second half giving the Warriors a 30-26 advantage. Michigan Tech would trail by two (30-28, 32-30) twice early on but wouldn't get any closer than three the rest of the way.
MTU would go over four minutes without a field goal as WSU built a 40-32 lead. Wayne State's advantage would be trimmed from eight to four (42-38) following a four-point play (triple plus free throw) by Huskie Jordan Reetz.
A conventional three-point play by Udanoh pushed the lead to seven.
The Warriors advantages would remain between five and nine points until Hojnacki's bucket with 81 seconds left.
Senior guard
Dale Brundidge (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) connected on a jumper with 42 seconds remaining making it 54-49. On the ensuing possession, Hojnacki missed a triple and Udanoh made a pair of free throws giving WSU a 56-49 lead.
An Ali Haidar put-back with 10 seconds left preceded a pair of Prophet foul shots. MTU's Alex Culy tried to make it interesting with a triple with three seconds left, but Udanoh sealed the road victory with two free throws.
Udanoh and Haidar tied for game-high scoring honors with 15 points, with Udanoh recording a game-high nine rebounds.
Larkin, Prophet and senior guard
Stacey Waters (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) each contributed 13 points for the Warriors.
WSU was 11-of-12 from the foul line compared to four-of-five for MTU.
Even though Wayne State made two more field goals than Michigan Tech (22-20), the Huskies were credited with nine assists to five for the Warriors.
Wayne State returns to the Matthaei next Saturday (Feb. 11) for a 3 p.m. tip-off against Northwood on Pink Wave and Doc Andrews Day.
