GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- The Midwest Region's eight-ranked Wayne State Warriors men's tennis squad (11-7, 5-1 GLIAC) defeated the region's tenth-ranked Grand Valley Lakers in a
5-4 triumph in Grandville, Michigan Friday Afternoon.
The bottom of the line-up pushed the Warriors past the Lakers (10-10, 6-2 GLIAC) with wins at the second and third doubles flights and the final three singles flights.
At doubles, sophomore
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and redshirt freshman
Jason Chen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) won 8-4 over GVSU's
Josh Kazdan and Bryan Hodges to give the Warriors their first points.
Sophomre
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.) and junior
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador) each dropped their first sets and rallied to win the second sets and third-set tiebreakers to help the Warriors to victory. Chen won at six singles in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
WSU returns to the Matthaei Courts April 13 against Findlay.
