DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team won its 12th straight match Monday afternoon, beating Division I foe Valparaiso University 8-1 indoors at the Multipurpose Indoor Facility.
The Warriors (14-1, 13-1 GLIAC) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
The WSU junior pair of
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) and
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) won at the top flight 8-4, while the freshmen duo of
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) were also victorious, winning at the third flight 8-3.
Wayne State swept the singles flights, taking all of the matches in straight sets. At the top flight, Moore earned a 6-0, 7-5 win after winning six straight games to conclude the second set and the match. Sophomore
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) was a 7-5, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles and Mitrache posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at the third flight.
Sophomore
Anastasia Burobina (Toronto, Ont. / Robert Bateman) posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles, sophomore
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) didn't drop a game on her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and Hughes won in a second set tiebreak to clinch her match, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at the sixth flight.
With the victory, the Warriors improved to 8-0 at home this season.
Wayne State is preparing for the GLIAC Tournament, which begins at 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland. The Warriors are ranked No. 2 in the tournament and play seventh-seeded Ashland in their quarterfinal matchup.
