Women's Tennis Advances to GLIAC Tournament Semifinals

MIDLAND, Mich.
-- The Wayne State University women's tennis team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play Friday and cruised to a 5-0 victory over Ashland University in its quaterfinal match at the GLIAC Tournament, being held at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

The Warriors (15-1), the No. 2 seed in the tournament, advance to the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals, facing third-seeded Tiffin at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in Midland.

WSU won all three matches in doubles Friday by a combined score of 24-9 to take a 3-0 advantage heading into the singles flights.

Wayne State's junior duo of Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) topped Ashland's Daniela Alves and Andrea Ruiz 8-4 at the top flight in doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomores Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and Anastasia Burobina (Toronto, Ont. / Robert Bateman) topped Ashland's Meghann Fitzpatrick and Pyper Brown 8-4. Freshmen Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) beat AU's Kendal Stephens and Sally Trout 8-1 at the third doubles flight.

Wayne State clinched the match with victories at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Mitrache secured a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alves at the third flight, while Briand won 6-1, 6-0 beat Stephens at No. 5 singles.

Wayne State beat Tiffin 6-3 earlier this season at home. Wayne State took two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles flights in that match.
