MIDLAND, Mich.
-- The Wayne State University women's tennis team played in its first GLIAC Tournament Championship match in program history Sunday, but fell 5-2 to Northwood University in the title match.

The Warriors, the No. 2 seed of the tournament, finished the fall season 16-2 overall, having just lost to Northwood twice during the regular season. The second-place tournament finish by coach Sheila Snyder's squad is the highest finish for Wayne State in program history.

Wayne State trailed 2-1 after doubles play Sunday. Sophomores Anastasia Burobina (Toronto, Ont. / Robert Bateman) and Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) earned a victory over Northwood at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-4.

In singles, the Warriors needed four victories for the match win. WSU got one point back as junior Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) secured a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles for the Warriors.

Northwood was able to clinch the match, however, with victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles.

The Warriors reached the GLIAC Tournament finals with a 5-0 win over Ashland in the quarterfinals Friday and a 5-1 victory over third-seeded Tiffin a semifinal matchup on Saturday.

Wayne State finished second in the GLIAC regular season standings, finishing 13-1 in conference matches for the second straight season. The Warriors had a 14-match win streak during the regular season and through the first two matches of the GLIAC Tournament.
