GAME STORYLINES
The Warriors enter a pivotal GLIAC North Division battle with Michigan Tech on Thursday riding a six-game winning streak. At 13-3 in conference play, Wayne State is just a half game in front of the Huskies (13-4 GLIAC) for the division lead.
WSU begins its final homestand against Michigan Tech, playing three games in eight days. The Warriors play their final home contest Feb. 21 against Ferris State before finishing the season with three road games.
Wayne State has already clinched a playoff berth and has tied the school mark for most conference victories in school history with 13. The 1980-81 and 1994-95 teams were the only other two squads to achieve 13 league wins in a season.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Warriors are included in the USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll for the second straight week. WSU is receiving 10 votes in the poll, which was released on Tuesday.
LAST WEEK
Wayne State improved to 7-2 on the road this season with victories over Northwood and Saginaw Valley.
The Warriors needed overtime to dispatch the Timberwolves, winning 67-65.
Talisha Bridges made a jumper with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the game at 62.
In overtime, WSU scored five of the eight points to earn the victory.
Juanita Cochran had game-highs of 21 points and 15 boards, while
Talisha Bridges also notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Brittany Streetman added 12 points.
Four players scored in double figures as the Warriors also knocked off Saginaw Valley, 68-58.
Talisha Bridges had her second straight double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds).
Phaebre Colbert came off the bench to post 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Stephanie Lock had a career-high 11 points and Cochran tallied 10 points for WSU.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN TECH
The Huskies are winners in six of their last seven games. Michigan Tech enters its contest against WSU on a two-game winning streak, beating both Ferris State and Grand Valley last week.
Sam Hoyt is the lone MTU player to average in double figures as she scores 16.0 points per game. She also leads the squad in assists (86), steals (41) and free-throw shooting (91.5 percent).
Jillian Ritchie pulls down 5.5 rebounds per game to lead Michigan Tech, while Paige Albi averages 5.2 boards per game. Emma Veach leads MTU in shooting from the field at a 52.6 percent clip.
The Huskies have made 161 three-pointers and are shooting 40.4 percent from beyond the arc. Both marks are second in the GLIAC.
SCOUTING NORTHERN MICHIGAN
The Wildcats are the victims of two straight losses at home, falling to Grand Valley and Ferris State. NMU did defeat Michigan Tech, 69-60, on Feb. 2.
Alyssa Colla leads Northern Michigan in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game. Colla is the team leader in assists per game at 3.0.
Lauren Gruber also averages in double figures for the Wildcats, scoring 12.3 points per game. Gruber leads the squad in shooting percentage (47.0), steals (31) and three-pointers made (34). Nea Makela is the top rebounder for Northern Michigan, grabbing 5.9 rebounds per game.
NMU is one of the more effective GLIAC teams from the free-throw line, sinking 73.2 percent of its shots. Gruber shoots 88.8 percent from the line.
SERIES HISTORY
Wayne State has lost nine straight games against Michigan Tech, last winning 62-61 on Jan. 18, 2007, in Detroit. The Warriors are 15-36 overall and 9-16 at home all-time against the Huskies.
WSU defeated Northern Michigan 63-59 in its first meeting this season. The Warriors are 10-11 at home and 19-28 all-time against NMU.
ON THE BENCH
Carrie Lohr is in her second season as head coach of the WSU women's basketball program. Lohr has a 27-19 record in her Warrior coaching career.
Kim Cameron has compiled a 66-16 record in three seasons as Michigan Tech's head coach.
Northern Michigan's Troy Mattson is in his eighth season as head coach, recording 96 victories.
REBOUND WARRIORS
The Warriors lead the GLIAC in rebounding at 47.1 rebounds per game. WSU also leads the conference in offensive rebounds per game (18.8).
